Chicken Tractors

Are you wanting to raise your own natural chicken but aren’t sure how to do it? Don’t worry, it can be very daunting at first however trust me it will become much easier!

Chickens don’t ask for much, basically just food, water, and a clean, dry, safe environment. There are many options for natural chicken feed, you can typically find them at your local feed store or even have them shipped online.

However if you’re wanting to raise them grass-fed it’s also very simple! If you’re like me and don’t have much extra time then you might want to do what we did. My husband found a chicken tractor kit online and it was perfect for us! The kit didn’t cost to much and was very easy to put together therefore our chickens were able to enjoy the outdoors right away!

When you’re doing pasture raised chickens you want to move the chicken tractor around fairly often when they’re little, and you can get a couple days on one patch of grass. However soon enough you will have to be moving them to a new grass patch every day, but it only takes up about 10 mins of your day to do so.

Even though the chickens are able to eat fresh grass and all the nutritious bugs we always make sure they have plenty of regular feed to eat as well as lots of fresh water.

It typically takes about 8 weeks to grow a 5-6 lbs chicken. You don’t want the chickens to get to old or big. As a meat chicken grows above 10 lbs their legs begin to no longer support their weight therefore breaking them. Also, the older a chicken gets the tougher their meat can become. Optimal processing weight and tenderness is around 5-6 lbs and about 8 weeks.

This one of our chicken tractors, as you can see there is plenty of room for them to grow. Chickens each need around 2 square foot of space to grow.

Happy, healthy, naturally raised birds create nutritious and healthy food for you and your family!
